Turkish Curse Word

This is an example of a nonverbal Turkish curse word. The students say that this is something that is very Turkish...very interesting. It was hillarious that she couldn't stop laughing.

Turkish Ideal of Femine

This is just a woman in normal life in Istanbul. Women of Turkey have the freedom to dress how they want. For many who are Muslims this is the way they might dress. Some wear a hijha and burka, some may wear a full length skirt or dress. The way women dress is a personal preference.

Turkish Place of Worship

This is one of the many mosques of Istanbul, with Islam being the most proment religion a mosque would be a typical place of worship.

Something that was amazing about being in istanbul was that you could always see a mineret of a mosque, and hear the call to prayer any where in the city.

Typical Home in Istanbul

With Istanbul being a large city, most of the residents live in appartments. There are homes in villages and on the sea side, but most of the people we encountered during our stay lived in appartments of some kind.
Turkish House Pet

This is not in a house, but cats are everywhere. I was told by some of the Turkish students we met that many people will take in the cats off the streets as a house pet. This was something that happens also in the US, we just have less street cats...WAY LESS.
Male BFFS

This is an example of male BFFs in a park in Istanbul.

I did not think that getting a picture of this would be very interesting, but it really was. If we saw two guys walking in a park with arms around eachother in the US we would automtically think they were homosexual. That is definately not the case in Istanbul, male friends walk arm and arm, hold hands, or what ever this is.

Space Expectations

This was following one of our fellow travelers down the street trying to sell her one of the toys in his hand.

This was something that occured very often and would not "fly" in the US. People do not follow you down the road, and get in your face to try and sell you something.

Turkish Transportation
Gas in Turkey is 4 tl per liter! This is a huge amount for gas! Public transportation seems the way to go for the most part. This is a picture of a city bus, I believe it's about 3tl per ride.

A Turkish Lunch
Our guide ordered a plate of Tukish ravioli for our whole group. There is a lot of kabobs, shepard's salad, soup, and pasta. This was our most interesting lunch while in Turkey, the sauce is a yogurt base.

A Minor Crime in Turkey
On our first day our bus was pulled over because of the tint on the windows. It turns out that the tint was original, so there was no ticket. This is also something that may happen in the US.

The difference between what I posted for the crime in The US, the speeding ticket, is that in Turkey there is much more speeding...and pedestrians feel like they will get run over. Cars will speed up when you try to walk

A Prestigious Job

This is a picture my friend took for me in 2011. The man on the right is the presedent of University of South Carolina. I was a member of the marching band/ colorguard that year, and he invitied us to his house for a dinner party :)

American public and private space expectations
People are expected to park in between the lines. This is a picture taken in the parking lot of where I work. Some of my co-workers were playing a game, and I was glad I did not become apart of this. Some people really do park like this on a normal basis, but it is rude and uncomfortable for others having to park around them.

An Example of Male BFFs
This is some guys that were at church Sunday night. They seem to be really good friends :)
It seems like when guys are around there BFFs they are nothing but goof balls. (See guy with closed eyes...he did that on purpose)

A minor crime in America
This is a warning I got when I was speeding on my way to work. I definitely deserved an actual ticket, but he let me off with only a warning :) I was probably going 50-60 mph in a 40 zone. From this I probably suffered a bruised reputation, because I know the police man outside of this event.

The Idea of American Femininity
Pictured is hair dye, hair spray, powder & brush, mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, pink nail polish, and my favorite perfume.
In America I feel like as a female we are expected to use all of these products and more for a very unrealistic look. Some of the most feminine women I know are known for their make-up and styled LONG hair.

An American Place of Worship
This is one of the sanctuaries at the church I go to, First Baptist Spartanburg. This is inside of The Hangar, which is a separate building that we are blessed to have for mostly youth through young adults. This is also a meeting place for Merge (the college and young adult ministry) on Sunday nights. Crossfire is held here for the youth on Wednesday nights.

Another something that my dear cousin Leah got me. It's a pre-made packing list.
I love what it says at the bottom...
"Bring half of what you think you need, and twice the money"

A Typical American Lunch

Kraft microwaveable Mac & cheese is something I eat every Saturday I work for lunch. I also eat this at school when I don't want to go out for lunch. I don't know if this is typical American, but it is typical me. This is something easy and pretty cheap to do for lunch if you have a microwave and water...don't forget the spoon :)

An American Childhood Milestone

This is my niece Karrigan, she just started walking recently, and had her first birthday this week. Walking would be an example of a childhood milestone. This is her just getting a little bit of help from a bar stool.

This is a necklace that my cousin got me for Chirstmas. It is a magnified peice of map where Istanbul is. She loves to travel and was excited to hear that I would finally be getting out of the country.

This blog is part of a class project. I am doing study abroad with Greenville Tech over spring break. We will be flying out to Istanbul, Turkey on March the 29th and returning on April the 7th.

I will be posting the picutures for this project on here. We have to find pictures of 5 typical American objects and 5 picutres of examples of ideas, like greetings and gestures. When we get to Istanbul we will then take picures of these things there.

I also be posting some about by first experience on a flight for any reason at all.
Wish me luck! I will need your prayers!

A Typical American House Pet

This is Sadie, our family dog.
She is a collie mix that we rescued from a humane society.

A Typical American Home

This is an example of a typical American home.
3 bedrooms & 2 bathrooms
along with some kids toys outside

Typical American Transportation

This is an example of typical American transportation.
This is my 2000 Volkswagen Beetle.
Originally from Germany, Volkswagens are now made in America.
Americans now look for small full efficient vehicles to get around in. This is due to the increasing gas prices.
Those who do not live in large cities will normally have their own form of transportation, may it be car, van, truck, motorcycle, or bike.
